It's only human to not understand something you have never experienced. Take for instance the color 'blue'. No amount of words can tell you what it looks like if you've never seen it with your own eyes. I can try all I want but honestly, it would be just naive of me to. But instead I can tell you what it feels like - to see the blue of the sparkling ocean, to see it in a lover's eyes - and that would probably make a lot more sense to you than anything else. Quite often I see people get fixated on an event while telling a story without realizing that sometimes, the emotion it evokes can be far more moving and powerful than the event in itself.
So yes, the music was never meant to be an insight into my experiences. But it will tell you how I felt at the time I wrote it, and that's all I ever wanted
